Janet & Bill's Version of the Adventure

Day 1 - There Goes the Antenna!

We went to Radio Shack and got a "Y" for the CB and GPS.  We left at 12:00 - stopped at 12:02, the antenna blew off the jeep!  We drove to Terra Haute, IN.  Janet picked up a coupon book at a rest stop, we had a coupon for the Hampton Inn for $59.00, that is where we are spending the night.  We ate across the street at the Texas Roadhouse, the food was very good.

Day 2 - Cowboys, Indians, and the Great Plains, It's Oklahoma!!   

We saw Route 66, once called the Main Street of America.   Its pavement stretches 2,400 miles and once connected Chicago to Las Vegas.  It now looks rather lonely with several sections closed and overgrown with weeds. 

Today Oklahoma has one of the largest Indian populations in the country. They were forced onto the Indian Reservations in a march called the Trail of Tears which resulted in a quarter of the population being eliminated by fatigue, hunger and exposure.  Looking out over the great expanse of land, you can imagine the rugged cowboys herding the cattle across this dust bowl which came to symbolize the rough and wild wild west.

Day 3  - Moriarty, NM - Hot Hot Hot New Mexico

We arrived in Moriarty, New Mexico and stopped to eat in a Mexican restaurant that was located on the old Route 66. Our waitress was an angry teetotaler, who would not and could not make sweet tea.  Her boss told her not to, so there goes the sweet tea as for her she was anything but sweet.

Hot hot hot New Mexico,  home of the worlds finest chili peppers.  More than 10 varieties and mostly extra hot..  Ristras colorful strings of sun dried chili peppers hang on doorways to ward off evil and welcome visitors.  Spicy foods and sunny skies.

Day 4 - All Aboard the Grand Canyon Railroad

Route 66 tagged along our trip. I learned a lot of the history and enjoyed seeing the old buildings that were once flourishing and now abandoned.  On one particular rest stop, the bathrooms were located within a jewelery store ... and the rest is history. Some ching ching for bling bling and some black gold now sparkles along with us on our trip. Yay for us!!!!!

All aboard the Grand Canyon Railroad.  Oh but first, a shoot out with some wild cowboys and I was thrown in jail, but escaped on the train to the Canyon. The train was great we saw a few cows..MOOO.  Finally, the Grand Canyon and all her majesty. It was amazing!  We met up with Chris and Lisa, who were camping.  We had lunch in a quiet little bar with great hamburgers, and had a say goodbye to my family.  We're staying the night in the Canyon at Yavapai Lodge.  We had a great dinner at El Tovar. Yippee for us..

Today another glimpse at the Canyon and its off to Vegas Baby!!!!
